The Raft offers you the experience of dining while
hovering above the water of the Walvis Bay Lagoon.
It is a big concept and a big achievement. Sitting on
stilts buried deep in the lagoon bottom, the restaurant
can seat 165 people in the main dining area alone, plus a
huge bar & bistro. The architecture belies a uniqueness
and inspiration that Sarah and Gary Goldsack pursue in
order to create the full Raft experience.
There are few restaurants in the world that sit just metres
above sea water. The lagoon offers relatively calm waters to
make it possible, and every effort is made to enhance the
intimacy with the sea. Every wall that faces the water, East,
South, and West, is nothing but floor to ceiling windows
and supports to keep them in place. Old jetty poles, scarred
by mussels and limpets, jut through a floor built of jetty
gangway planks. They are enhanced by the soft oranges
and yellows of the dining room walls, supporting the high
timber roof ceilings.
Gary, Sarah and head chef, Belinda, have comprised a menu
focused on fun and creative dishes. Highlights of the huge
menu include Bushman Dim Sum, a selection of meaty
bites including Warthog Samoosa, Ostrich Wonton, Zebra
frikadell and a limey Crocodile croquette. Traditional fish
and meat recipes are complimented by excellent Indian
dishes, and the new menu features a good deal more slow
roasted and home smoked dishes.
Besides the atmosphere, the food, and the company, let’s
not forget that at the Raft you also happen to be sitting
on top of one of the world’s best birding areas. At low tide
the greater flamingos stomp around in circles, flushing out
the crustaceans, while the lesser flamingos parade around,
smaller, but pinker, than their “greater” counterparts.
From your warm, comfortable perch in the restaurant, you
can see seals and occasional schools of Atlantic bottle-nosed
dolphins taking a detour into the lagoon on their way up
and down the coast between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
Great atmosphere, great food, great view, and great
company. Come aboard the Raft to enjoy the good life!
